Form and idea
Deniz Mall is easy to recognise by its silhouette: a blooming lotus with "starry" petals and a central tower reaching upward. Behind the image lies a considered architectural idea.
The building was designed by the renowned British practice Chapman Taylor. Its form joins images of nature with the national symbols of Azerbaijan.
Architecture
At the heart of the composition are eight star-shaped "wings", inspired by the eight-pointed star of the Azerbaijani emblem, and together the building resembles a lotus flower risen from the water.
The centrepiece is a tall "flame tower" — a reference to fire, an age-old symbol of Azerbaijan, the "land of fire".

Architectural language
A design by the renowned British architecture practice.
A flower risen straight from the sea.
Star-shaped petals after the Azerbaijani star.
The high accent — a nod to the "land of fire".
Architecture
Glass façades fill the space with light by day and turn the building into a glowing object by night. The architecture plays on the contrast with the smooth sea and the green boulevard.
So Deniz Mall became not just a shopping centre but a full part of Baku's waterside skyline.

Interpretations of the image (lotus, sail, star) vary across sources; the most common descriptions are given here.
